Should Hindus Break Coconuts In Big Numbers?

MENTAKAB, March 9 (Bernama) -- Thaipusam is celebrated grandly every year at Lord Murugan's temples in Batu Caves, Ipoh, Penang and other locations around the country.

Apart from kavadis and chariot procession that Malaysians are familiar with, another act synonymous with the celebration is the breaking of coconuts by Hindus.

The Hindus believe it is one of the ways to invoke the blessings of Lord Murugan and this is why some go to the extent of breaking hundreds or even more than a thousand coconuts.

But sadly the immediate result is an unsightly trail of coconut fragments on the roads and temple grounds and this had prompted many parties including Hindus to reconsider this practice.
